How does data roaming work for iPhone (AT&T)?

Hi! I have an iPhone and I'm planning to go on a trip to Reno, Nevada. Since i live in California, i was wondering if data roaming applies out-of-state, out-of-country, or both. i am currently on AT&T and i have the iPhone data plan. Any information would be helpful.
