VW Golf 03 reg, CD player does not work?

When trying to load a single cd in the cd player, I get an error message saying " check magazine" then it spits the cd out and says cd error. I do not have an auto changer though there is an option for it according to the cd front. It knows that there is a cd in as the cd light comes on. Any Ideas?
