In the 1920's the battleship was the ultimate naval weapon. Yamamoto knew the value of the aircraft carrier, but still predicted that a decisive surface engagement would turn the tide for Japan. By leaving Nagumo vulnerable to a carrier counterstrike and not concentrating his forces on Midway or more importantly, on the US ships, he lost the carriers piecemeal while the Yamato and main body were 300 miles away from the carrier force that was pummeled by Spruance and Fletcher.
